Day 16 완 료

여기에 두개의 고요한 바다 사진이 있다. between negotiating swells, I got off during an early water break west of Namwon, outside Kumho Resort, and as the tourist map reads: "Namwonkeuneong Beach Beauty Spot."

Day 16 of The Jeju Big Swim for Sunday, August 15, 2010, we left Namwon Harbor at 7:45 a.m., and arrived at Wimi Harbor by 11:15 a.m., covering 7 kilometers in 3.5 hours, pacing at 2 kmph.
Out of Namwon Harbor, dare I say, an entourage of well-wishers led by Chai Ba-da, cheered us before we had to spend an enormous amount of energy heading straight into the sea for half a kilometer, darting whitewater wave after whitewater wave to get far enough around a reef lighthouse before turning and going west.
This was nerve racking to say the least.

We arrived at Wimi, with minimal breaks, and I am happy to annouce, I believe, we have now reached full "lookie loo" status with the locals. The stares are priceless from the people watching from shore, harbors, and lighhouse vantage points.
Monday awaits. It appeared today west of Wimi the waters are much more tolerable and manageable. It we can, our sights are set on Seogwipo Harbor for Day 17.
When we do, I will have plenty to write about and a lengthy notebook as well.

Day 15 완 료

It was a long time waiting, but we finally got back in the water and moved another 6.5 kilometers.

For Saturday, August 14, 2010, The Jeju Big Swim team started out of Sinheung-ri at 8:45 a.m., and landed in Namwon Harbor at 1 p.m., pacing at more than 1.5 kmph. This was Day 15 overall, and the 10th of swimming/kayaking.

The water was cold, the air provided low visibility, stormy skies were spotted throughout to the north, choppy waves appeared everywhere, whitewater ran all too often at any sign of rocks below, and garbage patches popped up unexpectedly.

One last thing: The Marine Police did not like us today, according to one of our translators.

Notable passings for this stretch - but due to fog, and not being able to take a decent picture because of concentrative kayaking duties, the map could only tell me so - included Taeheung-ri and their coastal Primary School.

Since I couldn't take pictures, other people did, and I took a picture of them. Here was Korean award-winning photographer Kim Ok-sun and one of her students before launching at Sinheung-ri.
Three kilometers from the start we pulled into the harbor, I believe at Taeheung-ri, and took out the binoculars to assess the whitewater off the shore. Walls of rocks jutting perpendicular to the coast for meters and meters caused us grief, but Sherrin fought off anxiety and we moved forward.

Today marked the first day we changed tides. The first 80 kilometers from Samyang to Sinheung-ri, we took the outgoing tide, from high tide to low tide. Now, we started at low tide, taking the incoming tide.

Our gurus told us to take the incoming; Sherrin chose the outgoing; I believe we could have cut across each one respectively.

We're eyeing Sunday as a big day if the weather cooperates.

After landing at Namwon, several Koreans looked us up and down after doing double takes, and if they could have spoken English, would have said something like: "What the hell is going on here? Are these aliens?

쉐린의 제주빅수영 출발 연설

Here is the speech Sherrin gave at the sendoff of The Jeju Big Swim on Saturday, July 31, 2010:

The swim represents a mindset. Our swim will have no practical impact in the short term. It won't make less plastic in the sea. It won't stop overfishing. It won't stop people using their cars. But, the Jeju Big Swim is meant to bring attention that our lifestyles are costing the planet.

Big polluters don't start out with big chimneys and SUV cars. He didn't start out pumping pesticides, chemicals, and plastics into the sea. Big polluters started small as 6-year-olds throwing papers underfoot in the streets, heaving old bottles into vacant lots, leaving the remnants of a picnic in the fields or forests.

Change these behaviors and we can change the world.
